The High Commissioner of Greenland

The High Commissioner of Greenland is an institution under the Prime Minister’s office.

The High Commissioner is the chief representative of the Danish Government in Greenland and the liaison between the Home Rule Authorities and the Danish Authorities. The Home Rule Government can encourage the High Commissioner to participate in negotiations. Furthermore the Home Rule Government must notify the High Commissioner as soon as possible of all statutes and regulations adopted by the Landsting (Parliament) and of any other general legislation drawn up by the Home Rule Government.

Furthermore the High Commissioner’s assignments consist of:

1.

Regularly reports to the Prime Minister’s Office, attending the sessions of the Home Rule Parliament and giving reports on debates in the Home Rule Parliament to the Prime Minister’s Office and other relevant Danish ministries.

2.

In charge of matters concerning family law.

3.

Coordinating planning and implementation of visits in Greenland by the Royal Family, the Danish Parliament and the Danish Government and participating in the meetings during the visits.

4.

Coordinating of the Danish Authorities in Greenland more principal addresses to the Home Rule Government.

5.

Issuing permits for Danish citizens in Greenland to pass through the defense area on Thule Air Base.

6.

In charge of election in Greenland to the Danish Parliament and other elections decided by the Danish Parliament.

7.

Ruling on complaints about decisions made by the national register.

8.

Recommending on Royal distinctions (orders of chivalry and medals.

The High Commissioner of Greenland is an ex-officio member of the Danish-Greenlandic Cultural Foundation.
